There are several dental procedures that fall under the category of metal-free restorations. Here are some of them:
Some of the most commonly used materials for metal-free restorations are ceramic, zirconia and composite resin (a combination of glass and plastics). Each avenue provides a way to restore your smile without the use of potentially toxic metals and the need to remove more precious tooth material.
Years ago, metal restorations were highly preferred because of their durability and their relatively inexpensive cost. Over time, though, they have been found to be a less desirable way of restoring a smile. As mentioned above, the use of metal can result in toxins being released into the mouth once the restorations begin to fail. Furthermore, over time, metal can start to expand and contract in response to temperature changes in the mouth, which can leave patients vulnerable to painful tooth and gum decay.
Thankfully, with metal-free restorations, patients can experience the following benefits:
In just one appointment, you can receive a metal-free filling. We’ll start by removing any decayed or damaged tissue. Then, Dr. Cofer will apply the composite resin directly to the tooth, shape and bond it using a special light.
The process of fixing a smile by applying a tooth-colored dental crown, bridge or other restoration usually takes two visits for us to complete. At your first appointment, a dental professional will prepare your smile by removing any damaged or decayed structure. When necessary, we’ll also remove a thin layer of enamel so that your final restoration will fit seamlessly with the rest of your smile.
Once the preliminary work is done, we’ll capture bite impressions so that we can custom create the perfect fixture to meet your smile needs. Before you leave our office, Dr. Cofer will fit you with a temporary structure to protect you while your final restoration is being created. When we receive the final restoration from our lab, we’ll invite you back to our office to have it securely bonded into position. Your dentist in Greybull will make sure you leave looking and feeling like a new person!
